Who would have imagined that this nameless, unsigned act that placed a sign, "Gomez – the gig is here," directing their friend (last name Gomez) to their performance would have had such a whirlwind career? Only two years after the band was formed, in Southport (near Liverpool) England, they released their 1998 Mercury Music Prize winning debut, Bring It On. They have, since then, worked the summer festival circuit, done their fair share of touring, and recorded two more albums. In Our Gun, their third endeavor, was recorded, written, and performed by the band.

Gomez fuzz the boundaries of music genre by creating a body of work featuring a plethora of sounds from blues to electronica to space funk to folk-inspired tunes. In one word: eclectic. Utilizing the vocal talents of three band members, each song gives a completely different perspective.

Shot Shot, the first track, has a bit of a frenzied vibe created by the funky bass lines sprinkled with saxophone, spacey tweaks, and the vocals of Ian Ball. Changing vocalists with Rex Kramer, Ben Ottewell adds his rich, deep, soulful vocals to this blues meets electronic-groove rock tune. The title track, In Our Gun, a ballad inspired by the election of President George Bush, has an American western-folk vibe. Imagine sitting around a dwindling fire at a western ranch listening to the sounds of guitar and harmonica. Then, just as the fire is extinguished a quick dash of space guitar and techno rhythms dance the song to its finish. Following the same mellow, late night American campfire theme, The Sound of Sounds, features all three vocalists together lulling the listener with their harmonies. Changing moods, Army Dub jumps in with vocals and rhythms sounding deceivingly like the Charlatans UK.

In Our Gun delivers thirteen songs that hang in the content but uncertain, ever changing world that Gomez creates through their uncompromising musical art for those who are indecisive about what to listen to.
