The Holy Smokes
(Self-released)
The Holy Smokes, one of Las Vegas' most lauded bands, are known for their distinctive bluesy roots-rock and exemplary songwriting. The eight tracks on this self-titled CD, "recorded in our garage with borrowed mics and beat up gear," as stated in the liner notes, barely scratch the surface of their extensive repetoire, but are highly representative of their genre-defying sound. Luke Metz and Jeff Koening, who plays a mean harmonica, easily switch off on vocals; "Know How To Use It" is a sizzlingly sexy barn burner, while the narrative "Ripped And Torn Out Pages" slowly and mournfully illustrates the quartet's flexibility. "I Got A Girl" is reminiscent of the Ramones covering '50s pop songs, but with a more rootsy jangle, whereas "Born To Lose" thuds like The Cramps' "Human Fly." While much of this CD sounds fantastic, several tracks suffer slightly from this DIY production.
